Got my copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional from the Install Fest Microsoft had a few months back…
It came with a nice Product Key, but no instructions on how to take our existing trial edition and upgrade it to the fully registered professional product…
Here’s what I did to get it working:
Step 1.
Insert newly acquired Visual Studio 2008 Professional DVD that you received from Microsoft.
Step 2.
Wait till the auto-run starts, or right click on the CD and run the auto-run.
Step 3.
Select Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008
Step 4.
Wait till it goes through it’s initialization procedure and click next.
Step 5.
You’ll be prompted with a dialog with the Product Key Entry on the bottom and a button that says Upgrade. Enter in your Product Key and click Upgrade! (Hat tip to Paul Reedy for the screenshot)
Step 6.
Wash hands repeatedly and enjoy your free software…
That’s all that it took to get my copy up… from trial to Professional!

I figured I would uninstall the trial edition first but the uninstall dialog (from Control Panel) gave me an upgrade option so I just entered the key right there and everything went smoothly. I never even had to put the new disk in my machine. Thanks to MS for the free software.

need Visual Studio 2008 product key please
You’ll have to purchase a key through one of many online vendors, including Microsoft.
I also went to installfest, installed the trial version, filled out the form online…and never got the product from Microsoft. So, the trial edition expired and that’s it for me and Visual Studio, until I can tell Microsoft what the event ID was. Any idea?
Unfortunately I looked through my records and could not find the event… Sorry. Ask Chris Koenig?
Thanks a bunch. My trial copy had expired, so I thought I was facing a reinstall (and a big install it was). You definitely saved me on this one.
