Project Sun SPOT

Yay… another piece of super sweet technology that I’ll probably buy… and never finish a project with.

Project Sun SPOT

From the About Us section

…”Project Sun SPOT (Sunâ„¢ Small Programmable Object Technology) is a snapshot of ongoing research in Sun Microsystems Laboratories. Established in 1990, Sun Labs, with locations in California and Massachusetts, is the applied research and advanced development arm of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun Labs is one of the ways Sun invests in the future – the Labs is responsible for many of the technology advancements and inventions that have made Sun a technology powerhouse.”

Imagine the possibilities

  1. Swarm research

  2. Some sort of robot communication, maybe a framework using it’s base hardware.

  3. Remote data collection for environments. (Imagine a ton of little worker robots collecting field data that is way more accurate.)

  4. 2G/6G 3-axis accelerometer - All kinds of speed / velocity experiments.

I am chair of the tutorials track at OOPSLA 2006, and we hope to offer a tutorial on SPOT by the Sun folks themselves. It looks like an interesting idea. Will it take off?
