Costa Rica 2010 (Thoughts)
I’m not going to lie… I’ll put it right out there and say that this recent trip to Costa Rica was my first time that I have left the good ol’ USA. I’ve been land locked for all of my adult life and growing up there were no opportunities to go abroad. So getting a passport and traveling to a foreign country was definitely an exciting first experience. I want to talk...

Costa Rica 2010 (Pictures)
Here’s a small subset of the pictures from Costa Rica! (Click on the picture to get to the set) We flew in on July 1st and stayed till the 11th (our anniversary). We visited San Jose (San Pedro and Alajuela), Santa Elana (Monteverde), and Playa Zancudo. I’ll post more about my thoughts and feelings in a few days (given that this was my first experience abroad).

My iPad
Wanted to post a quick review of my iPad. Snagged one from a highschool kid in West Texas for a steal of a price. $550 for an unopened, 32 GB Wifi model. These are hard to come by (nobody has had them in stock for months). After playing with it for a week, my laptop use has gone down DRAMATICALLY as well as my iPhone use. I’m sure it’ll balance out more, given it’s a...

Fort Worth Business Ideas
Here’s two freebie business ideas for Fort Worth people: 1) There should be a food truck in Fort Worth. Plain and simple. Who cares what it serves, just get something mobile on the road… It’ll create the same type of hype that froyo is now across the metroplex, where everyone goes out to try it, finds out how good it is, and continues to go. It should be mobile and roam between...

Gadget Debates
The major debate right now is what to buy for a tablet, netbook, and e-reader… Many people want portable devices but we’re not exactly clear on what features we really want in the device… Do we want solely an e-reader? Do we want to browse the web? or sadly enough… Do we want to “work” while we’re mobile? The devices are all catering to those...

Multi-touch It
I was thinking about this today… while I was working with my normal setup (2 laptops and a large monitor in the middle). I want my screens to be multi-touch, but not make that my priority. Maybe my brain has been trained the last few years on my iPhone, but I swear to you today that I saw a dialog box come up with a big red X on it. I instinctively reached up and pushed the OK...

Google Buzz and Google Accounts
So I have to gripe about the GOOG for a second… Their account system is whack… it’s fractured and confusing… I have a “Google Account” I have a “Google Apps Account” They don’t work the same at all, they have separate sessions in my browser, and it just so happens that they have the same “email” as the login. How does this...

fantastic new music site that allows you to say what’s hot or not in music… features independent musicians… there’s an award system, achievements, that you can collect and challenges to complete… you also gain reputation and can wager that reputation on music selection… (side note: it’s named after the famous Highway 61 that runs along the Mississippi,...

“In this video a single Corynactis viridis polyp (about 8mm in diameter) is seen capturing and digesting tiny plankton as they flow past in the current. As the tentacles capture food, they retract towards the animal’s mouth, located at the center of the polyp. The mouth is likewise transformable; capable of extending, expanding, and enveloping food items.” from Corynactis viridis

To ring in the new year, John Robinson Jr. and I are launching a super simple side project that we’ve been putting together… view140 is a image search for Twitter, with a nice interface… Want to see what other people posted about the New Year? What about their favorite pizza? Or just browse through most of the pictures… The code is incredibly simple and it’s...

New Food Books
As part of my 2010 adventure into improving my cooking skills… I have acquired (through presents) 4 new books: Knife Skills Illustrated - a recommendation from some local foodies in the area, because I have good knives but I still slice myself every time I use them! Ratio: The Simple Codes Behind the Craft of Everyday Cooking - a hot new recommendation from the Twitter land…...

Goodbye 2009
What a year! It started out with a bang… we adopted our second pup, Bentley the Regal Beagle… Did lots of planning for a large event, which took place on July 11, 2009. I married the love of my life, Becca Anne. Learned a lot about cooking… Sold all of my DVD’s… got rid of them while people still believe in physical media :) Launched version 2.0 of the...

Groupon →
Groupon is a unique new startup that’s getting a ton of press, recently for valuation at $250MM. The idea is a combination of woot and time sharing… There’s a daily deal for a percentage off it’s regular price from a local retailer. If you like the deal, you can pledge to buy it. The deal only works though, if a certain (pre-determined) number of people pledge to buy it...

magntize
A friend of mine has started another venture with some cats from around the Dallas / Fort Worth area… Magnt is their general theme, with magntize being their first product. magntize is a hosted, pre-designed (and beautifully designed if I might add), customizable personal profile thingy-ma-bopper. It includes all kinds of juicy information about you: name, websites, profiles on social...

Rails Routes
WARNING: Geek Post In the Rails world, you have these things called resource routes… http://api.rubyonrails.org/classes/ActionController/Resources.html You can define how the url gets translated into which controller and action, based on REST principles, thin controllers, and fat data models. Image, if you will, you see this in your routes file: This already describes a lot about...

Conversationlist
So I briefly talked about Twitter lists a few days ago… and already there are some interesting things happening with them: Listorious.com - the first obvious implementation after someone gives you data is a directory that is taggable and searchable. Of course the huge thing is discovery… I created a DFW list that has 14 people following it and has over 135 people on it. ...

Twitter Lists
Recently, Twitter released Lists… a capability that people have been asking for, for a while. For example, I created a list of all the cool DFW people I follow: http://twitter.com/gooberdlx/dallas-fort-worth You can then follow that list.. or follow other people’s lists. This begs for 2 questions: How will this change Follow Friday? I could easily see some Follow Friday...
