And of course:
the drop.io launch party was freaking insane…
Hosted by Tinsley Mortimer (who is a socialite/debutant and a descendant of Thomas Jefferson, whatever the hell that means) at Le Royale… Hell, even Lewis Black showed up…
The party was killer, lots of great contacts were made all the way around… and if by chance you met me there shoot me an email and we’ll chat!
Here’s the launch party drop where you can see some more photos and get an idea of what it was all about!
Got my copy of Visual Studio 2008 Professional from the Install Fest Microsoft had a few months back…
It came with a nice Product Key, but no instructions on how to take our existing trial edition and upgrade it to the fully registered professional product…
Here’s what I did to get it working:
Insert newly acquired Visual Studio 2008 Professional DVD that you received from Microsoft.
Wait till the auto-run starts, or right click on the CD and run the auto-run.
Select Change or Remove Visual Studio 2008
Wait till it goes through it’s initialization procedure and click next.
You’ll be prompted with a dialog with the Product Key Entry on the bottom and a button that says Upgrade. Enter in your Product Key and click Upgrade! (Hat tip to Paul Reedy for the screenshot)
Wash hands repeatedly and enjoy your free software…
That’s all that it took to get my copy up… from trial to Professional!
Just a quick reminder to check out the meeting tonight… where I’ll be giving a run through of all things .Net and Ruby… Not really, but it’ll be an interesting little chat.
For this particular event, I’ve decided to get a collaborative meeting space going… where I’ve uploading the PPT and demo files that I used for the talk, including valuable resources and a place for people to collaborate.

Becca really pulled a fast one on me… she had me totally convinced that we were going away for the weekend. Instead, she convinced Tim and Mike to come down from Minnesota to have some fun!
We hit up some good bars, including Billy Bob’s and ate some good BBQ! Drank, grilled, chilled, had a grand old weekend. Thanks to Tim and Mike for making the trip!
Annndddddd she bought me a new gas grill! A nice Charmglow Porcelain 4 burner propane grill! (pictured below)…
Ain’t she the best?
Our February meeting will be held on Tuesday February 19th, 2008 at 6pm at Justin Brands.
Jake Good will be presenting: A Play-date with Rails and .NET
A Play-date with Rails and .NET
The new kid on the block of web
platforms is Ruby on Rails. We've heard about it, dabbled in it, and might have
considered using it in some our solutions… but one of the hesitations comes from
integration. How will it work with existing data? How will it work with existing
.NET applications and libraries? The answers are out there … and this
discussion will lead you to examples on how you can do integration (both ways)
between Ruby on Rails and .Net. You'll see how you can easily invoke / publish
web services, databases, and libraries between the two. Come check out what all
the hype is about and expand your toolbox to help provide better solutions to
your problems.
Speaker Bio
Jake is a senior consultant for Inetium that has been
consulting / developing software in the Twin Cities for nearly 4 years. Just
recently relocated to Fort Worth, TX. My development experience has been
primarily focused on smart client development and mobile development and social
networking. I've been working on a large social networking site (www.yfly.com) that has reached over 200,000 users
and the recently popular www.drop.io. My
interests for software development include: bioinformatics, genetics, .Net (C#),
Ruby on Rails, Erlang, and mostly scientific stuff, but I dabble in just about
everything!
Please visit the following post which contains more information on our new RSVP procedures.
The setting: Boston Convention Center for Microsoft TechEd 2006… 15,000 people… Keynote Address with Mary Lynn Rajskub (from the show 24)… I’m in the red polo…
Yeah… What are the odds?
The things you don’t really see are:
1:13 - I make a comment about my “good side”
1:36 - Asked if I could read the tellaprompter
3:40 - I made a move on Mary Lynn
4:44 - I get my own hug… ham it up there Jake.
Do I end up looking like a dork? Yes… but name another developer who could do that in front of that many of his peers :)
I got a new toy… the HP Photosmart C7280
One of those “all-in-one” devices… I find myself (working remotely) more and more printing, signing, and sending back documents… so I figured I’d get myself something nice for that and for photos. It has been doing a fantastic job.
Printer get’s a 4/5 from me… if it were $200, I’d say 5/5. The features are fantastic and it is working out really well…
Hope you enjoyed the information… if you’re looking for a very good “do everything” printer, this might be your choice!
No other than Improv Everywhere… these guys do some funny stuff.
I love those types of things… flash mobs rule! Just wish I could be a part of them…
Other examples:
So I started taking account of all of my social networking accounts… when I was doing Rails work for space150, I was on every major social network… Here’s the rundown…
If you find me on any others, or I’m forgetting some… let me know so I can update my list…
