i survived
So DreamHost decided to upgrade to Rails 1.1 out of the blue without warning. Lots of people are upset. I too was upset when I found out that my blog suddenly went down due to breaking changes in versions of Rails. I wasn’t about to scream and rant.
I knew some people would figure it out.
What did I do?
$cd sites/thoughtstoblog.com/vendor
$svn export http://dev.rubyonrails.org/svn/rails/tags/rel_1-0-0/ rails
Subversion to the rescue AGAIN.
UPDATE
To be fair, they reverted… and posted an article on it.
lots of little things.
A bunch of random shit once again… sorry for the lack of REAL posts.
- Rory is getting it, he even reviewed it.
- Ruby on Rails hit 1.1! Congratulations!

I think that should do it for now.
Color Chart v1.0.0.0
So I wrote a quick little demo application that might come in handy for a variety of different people.
Ever curious at how many colors are available in the .Net System.Drawing.Color Structure? Wonder what they look like?
Here’s your solution. DevelopStuff.Examples.ColorChart
Feature List:
- Uses reflection to cache available colors.
- Sorting by Name, RGB values, and clustering (as shown above).
- Ability to save colors according to form size to JPG,PNG,GIF, and BMP.
- Uses Double Buffering.
- Automatically resizes and redraws swatches.

this is NOT me
but I’d be damned if we would have had a video camera growing up, because I’m sure there’d be plenty of video content just like this…

Channel 9 Bots
So this is funny… I get random people wanting to add me to their MSN list… apparently from all over the world.
How’d they get my MSN address? They all “claim” to come from Channel 9 (a Microsoft developer site).
I’m always curious if these people are actually real, so I try to have conversations with them… asking them very specific questions that bots might answer funny or have trouble with.
Today marked one of the BEST conversations… Everything I know about AI and human interaction is pointing to this person being a bot, but the answers it spits back are tough to decipher. The flow, word choice, timing, and even context is very well done. I’ve talked to a lot of stupid bots, this one is a very smart one. It even did a time calculation for me, when I asked what time it was there…
Here’s an excerpt (though not the most convincing, this one led me to my final decision of it being a bot):
Mr. Good says:
I don't believe you're real.
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
oh why ?
Mr. Good says:
because there are lots of bots that go through Channel 9 and have found my email address...
Mr. Good says:
so then I ask questions
Mr. Good says:
like... What do you do for a living that would make you check out Channel 9?
Mr. Good says:
Why would you randomly add my email address?
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
i'm study computer sceince in frankfurt university
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
science*
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
i'm just want to have friends who working with IT like me
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
anyway i'm sorry if u don't like chatting with me
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
bye
Mr. Good says:
i wouldn't mind it if i didn't have the little (read:large) intiution that you're not real
Mr. Good says:
but yet somehow i keep conversing with you as if you were
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
as u like
Mr. Good says:
...
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
sorry i was on phone with my friend
All people love Money , Food , and ..... says:
so what do u mean ?

I think that should do it for now… until then, have a wonderful Thursday readers!
interesting idea
check this out , it’s built with rails plus it’s an interesting idea.
Visual Studio Find/Replace Efficiently
I swear by regular expressions… they are a tool that developers can use in many ways. Essentially it allows you to specific a wildcard search but with more restrictions. In layman’s terms, it helps you find shit.
Today’s lesson is on using regex for find/replace functionality within Visual Studio. I’m not going to teach you regular expressions, but I will show you how to easily use them within Visual Studio.
Say you have an xml comment that is ambiguous and is all over your entire project (say 167 times).
It looks like this.
///
It’s ambiguous because you’ll have multiple overrides of AddRange that take in an array, the custom collection itself, or maybe a generic list.
You’ll want to change it to a specific AddRange, or the more generic one.
///
There are 167 instances of this… Ohh Jake! What will we ever DO?
Start off by hitting CTL-H (find/replace)
You’ll want to “find” things that fit the description and replace them with a piece of the text you search against (which happens to be the wild card).
Here are the expressions
Find:
{[a-zA-Z]+}Collection.AddRange"/>
Replace:
1Collection.AddRange(1[])"/>
Let’s break the expressions down…
Find:
The {} braces signify that I want to capture the values you find, to use them later in the replace. [a-zA-Z]+ tell it to find 1 or more characters before it hits Collection.AddRange
Replace:
The 1 tells Visual Studio to take whatever I captured in my first set of {} braces and use that in my replace value.
See… it’s really that simple, 2 minutes of writing regular expression code saved me the trouble of opening, finding, and replacing lines of text in 167 files.
Not bad.
Falllkkkorrrr
So I had YAGW (read: Yet Another Good Weekend)…
Friday:
Being bored watching Greg and his buddies play Big Buck Hunter 2006 while being surrounded by people in green suits. (Green IS my favorite color, don’t get me wrong).
Saturday:
Went out on a great date with Amy. The whole thing was planned out perfectly… I showed up with flowers and a good book (following a discussion we had about the topic) promptly (she didn’t know when I was showing up) at 7:15pm. Dinner at Ike’s downtown, where we had a pot-pourri of foods… including lobster corndogs, artichoke hotdish, table-side quac, and of course… mini charlies. Followed by a few Jameson and cokes (for me) and vodka lemonades (for her) at The Local. A brief stop by the “Kissing Room” at The Local ended the night with perfection.
The title of the post reflects a conversation we had. The question was posed: “If you could have ANY animal, dead, alive, extinct, ficticious… What would you want as a pet?”. What was so interesting about our answers? They were both Falkor from The Neverending Story. She’s such a stalker.
Sunday:
Somewhat lazy… a movie in the afternoon followed by a bunch of TV, movie, video games, and book reading..
That about sums it up for my weekend, which ended up rocking.
Moving Images in March
Hidden in a Virtual world of Very interesting Vernacular, Valor often Validates the Vivacity and Vitality of Villains after they’ve Veered away from the path of evil.
Ok… I give up. I can’t carry on a large dialog using only words that start with V, as they did in the opening scene of V for Vendetta, the topic of this month’s Moving Images.
Built upon a story of vengence against a controlling government, the film tries to draw you into a plot thick with symbolism and Verbose dialog. There are times where the details get too thick to try to catch it all, but a few moments of humour sneak in for a good break in concentration.
The original story comes from a comic book series involving a freedom fighter named V who leads the people in a revolution against a controlling government. It’s often humorous when film makers place their personal ”Vendettas” into their work… it’s art right? Maybe it was me… or maybe it was completely obvious, but I saw a lot of outcry against more current affairs in our own government system. One such instance is the fear placed into society around the avian flu. Strange coincidence? I think not.
The action in the film, which the trailers tried to lure you in with, only took place a few times during the 2 hour and 10 minute film. Though little in numbers, it was big in complexity and slash factor. There is a love plot, even if it involves a bald Natalie Portman.
Overall I would say the movie is a good movie… not a great epic or superhero tale like Spiderman or The X-Men, but a movie that I’d watch again to catch even more of the details.
normally i hate these things
I can’t stand email forwards, chain mail, those “life” stories on MySpace, or any of those survey’s, and most of all… those “look at me, i need attention” bulletin posts.
but
I saw one earlier today, where you fire up your favorite music player, toggle shuffle on, and hit play. Answer the questions in order with the songs that come up.
It was kinda creepy what came up on some of the questions… (ones in bold)
How does the world see you?
2 of Amerikaz Most Wanted - 2Pac & Snoop Dog
Will I have a happy life?
Let it Bang - The X-Ecutioners
What do my friends really think of me?
Right About Now - Talib Kweli
Do people secretly lust after me?
Amibtionz Az a Ridah - 2Pac
How can I make myself happy?
Money, Power, & Respect - DMX/Lil’ Lim/ LOX
What should I do with my life?
Errtime - Nelly
Will I ever have children?
Lose My Breath - Destiny’s Child
What is some good advice for me?
Billie Jean - Michael Jackson
How will I be remembered?
It’s Goin’ Down - The X-Ecutioners
What is my signature dancing song?
Sea to Sea - Matisyahu
What do I think my current theme song is?
‘Bout it, ‘Bout it - Master P
What does everyone else think my current theme song is?
Refuge - Matisyahu
What song will play at my funeral?
Back Then - Mike Jones
What type of men/women do you like?
One Two Step - Ciara
What is my day going to be like?
Elegance - Kindohm
What will my love life be like?
Drugs, Basketball, & Rap - Talib Kweli
How will I be successful?
4,3,2,1 - Canibus/DMX/LL Cool J/Method Man/ Redman
I took it a little further and summed it up:
Everyone sees me as one of America’s most wanted, letting my life bang, making myself happy with Money, Power, and Respect; losing my breath when I figure out that I’m having a child, but Billie Jean’s not my lover.. and the kid isn’t mine. I’ll be remembered by what went down and I’m always ‘Bout it ‘Bout it.
Back then, hoes didn’t want me… now I got hot hoes all on me. I like the dancing kind of women… and today, my day will be filled with elegance.
How will I be successful? By counting backwards.
haha
who are YOU?
So as some of you know… I used to have a blog at whoisjake.com/blog.
The whole concept was for you and me to figure out who JAKE really is…
Where am I going with this? Well let me ask…
Who are all of you out there, my faithful readers?
I know who some of you are, but I would definitely like to know everyone.
If you read my blog (even if I know)… would you mind dropping me a comment or an email?
I’m just really curious and love to have interesting conversations with interesting people.
(p.s. I’m mostly curious as to whom is reading my blog from a West St. Paul K-12 school and a few others from all over…)
Talk About Motivation
The BEST motivation while working from home: try watching Rudy.
Damn that kid has heart.
Rudy! Rudy! Rudy!
More Snow? Are you SERIOUS?!?!
Yeah so I woke up to another 6” or so of snow… making for a total of 12 to 14” of snow… or something crazy like that.
No way I’m driving to Fridley today… at least this time I have hot water.
Hopefully I still get to chill with Amy and watch a movie tonight. We’ll see what the weather brings us.
What happens when Jake has no hot water?
Jake becomes grumpy (read: here comes a rant)
So I had a really good weekend… and on my day of rest (Sunday) I typically don’t shower (eww gross) unless I’m heading out of the house. It was nice.
Then I wake up on Monday morning… to a pile of snow… on March 12th, 3 fuckings days after 50F weather. This prevented me from travelling up to Fridley for my daily commute.
I go to hop in the shower… and guess what? NO HOT WATER. The circuit was tripped… which I flipped back on. Luckily, since I was now stuck at home… I could get away with not having a shower. I still wanted one. 2 hours later, the hot water didn’t return. I reset the water heater. Still no hot water.
Then I find out that my VPN connection to the client is hosing their bandwidth and I get nothing done for the day. Frustrating.
This morning? No hot water still… the work order is in to have someone come out and check on it, but man… not having a hot shower since Saturday evening is really playing mental games with me.
Then the drive this morning (ps, after a cold shower and a half hour of scraping and digging to get to my car) sucked. There’s nothing more annoying than being stuck in traffic between two females who think that their makeup application is more important than traffic flowing smoothly. An hour later, I arrive at my destination… I check my feedreader… and find out that I’m that guy.
Cold, no hot shower, long lines of traffic, frustrating VPN connections, snow… I need to get away.
Someone cheer me up.
Conversation with Taco Bell "Good to Go" Guy
Setting: I’m pulled up to an intersection in my Ferrari Challenge Strandale, just arriving from the local Taco Hell drive through… when up comes a blue impala driven by the one and only Taco Bell “Good to Go” guy.
(Jake does the “What’s Up?” head nod)
(Taco Bell Guy does the “What’s Up?” head nod)
Jake - So… how’s it going?
Taco Bell Guy - It’s good to go!
Jake - What’s good to go?
Taco Bell Guy - This crunchwrap supreme. It’s good to go!
Jake - Ok, you’ve mentioned that already. Wanna race?
(Jake revs his Ferrari up to 8500 RPMs)
(Taco Bell Guy reaches into his glove compartment box, whips out a D. Eagle)
Taco Bell Guy - Is it good to go now mutha fucka? How’s this treat you? You better recognize before you get hospitalized… fucking softshell taco mutha fucka.
Jake - WHAT THE FUCK? You are insane… Just don’t shoot me, I haven’t had time to eat my cheesy fiesta potatoes, it’s my favorite part of my $3.78 meal.
Taco Bell Guy - It’s ok man, It’s good to go.
(Jake checks to ensure he didn’t piss himself)
(Taco Bell Guys puts his gun down and chomps on his crunchwrap supreme)
Jake - You had me for a second… I mean, it was scary the first time I met the little chihuahua dog… I almost stepped on him, but this… this shit is out of control.
Taco Bell Guy - See, I told you… it’s good to gooooooo
(Taco Bell Guy does the “Good to Go” hand wave thing)
Jake - It’s not good to go. Holy shit. The only thing that’s good to go is the incredibly uncomfortable bowel movement that has taken course since my recent visit to Taco Hell in combination with you shoving a .50 caliber pistol in my FACE.
Taco Bell Guy - I’m sorry, do you want a coupon for a free 1/2 lb. beef and potatoe burrito?
(Jake smiles)
Jake - Sure.
Happy Birthday Chuck Norris
He turned 66 today…
You’ve seen all of those goofy facts… here they are, spoken from the legend himself.

Topological Sorting (my personal favorite)
interesting stuff (for me at least).
i love fridays
So today I decided, that since I love Fridays soooooo much… I’m going to take a half day.
What am I going to do on this half day (at home)?
Play Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (aka G.R.A.W), cause yeah, I bought it. w00t!
It’s a gorgeous game in 720p… simply stunning. The HUD alone is amazing, it deserves a closer look at what’s going on. Each character on screen is rendering at 18,000 polygons. That’s more than an entire level of Ghost Recon on the PS2 (take that Sony fan boi).
The HDR effects are delicious.
Overall… a sweet game, adds to my collection of 12 or 13 Tom Clancy games.

strange search queries
Many of you know I’m a sucker for statistics on websites…
the best statistic is how people are finding your site (search queries):
NOTE some of them are on subsequent pages.
:: chuckles ::
of all life's problems
…why does money always seem to be at the top of my list.
on one end, I’m getting another big promotion… but it seems as though money always leaves faster than it comes in… and someone else always claims that your money should become theirs.
Options:
- Rob a bank.
- Plan a heist (which would also bump up the coolness factor).
- Strip for money.
- Become a pusher. Maybe my street name would be Sniffles.
- Move my digital pimping skills into the real world.
or the more rational choices
- Visit a financial advisor and get on a budget/plan.
- Augment my income with moonlighting or other project/plan.
- Make a Web 2.0 startup and sell it before it bombs.
Whatever it is, something needs to happen…
p.s. don’t get me wrong, life is still really good, it can be better.
So long Kirby Puckett
Kirby Puckett dies at the age of 44 after complications surrounding his recent stroke.
I used to collect all of his baseball cards… he was one of the rare players that played baseball for baseball.
It’s a sad day for baseball.
:: tips a 40oz for Puckett ::
when someone asks
I respond.
“Jake… Do you believe in God?”
“No.”
“So you’re an atheist?”
“I’m a Bright.”
“What the hell is a Bright? Sounds kind of condecending to me…”
“A Bright is an individual who has a naturalistic world view, free of supernatural and mystical entities…”
“So you’re an atheist?”
“Yes. I just choose to use Bright as my label because of the negative implications that surround the word atheist.”
:: shrugs :: there you have it folks… plain and simple.
Project Sun SPOT
Yay… another piece of super sweet technology that I’ll probably buy… and never finish a project with.
From the About Us section
…”Project Sun SPOT (Sunâ„¢ Small Programmable Object Technology) is a snapshot of ongoing research in Sun Microsystems Laboratories. Established in 1990, Sun Labs, with locations in California and Massachusetts, is the applied research and advanced development arm of Sun Microsystems, Inc. Sun Labs is one of the ways Sun invests in the future – the Labs is responsible for many of the technology advancements and inventions that have made Sun a technology powerhouse.”
Imagine the possibilities
- Swarm research
- Some sort of robot communication, maybe a framework using it’s base hardware.
- Remote data collection for environments. (Imagine a ton of little worker robots collecting field data that is way more accurate.)
- 2G/6G 3-axis accelerometer - All kinds of speed / velocity experiments.
Typo problems
I apologize if within the last two days, you haven’t been able to hit the blog… I guess my modications I made for Mint and my stats package to my .htaccess file suddenly decided to stop working. Strange.

I’m not alone.
After installing WinFX CTP…you suddenly can’t add web/service references.

These little errors are getting annoying…
the effects of french fries
So I was at lunch today when I passed a White Castle…
(This article may get strange… I used to do things like this on my old blog)
As I was approaching the intersection I saw two large black birds with something in their mouths. It just so happened they were each holding 4 or 5 french fries that were obviously tossed out by someone near the White Castle.
My question is: What will the effects be on birds because they pick up junk food / restraunt food to survive? Will the cholesterol do something to the birds? Will they survive? Will the fittest survive because they don’t pick up the fries? Can humans learn from this sort of natural selection? Do you think that the birds would become super fat birds and will end up never flying?
What do you think?
funny quote of teh day
Vish says:
brb, bathroom, those cornuts i ate this morning arent sitting well :(
poor Veasnar… were they ranch or bbq?
video game update
Yeah it’s about time I started talking about video games again… it’s been a while. Shall we say I have been occupied?
Recently I have purchased:
Age of Empires : The Age of Kings (DS) - Very good, though it moves to a turn based strategy rather than a RTS style that we’re used to. This platform BEGS for TBS/RTS but with it’s size, leads to hand cramping. I guess that’s a good thing for a game.
Fight Night Round 3 (360) - I needed something new for the Xbox 360… the demo rocked. Even though I despise EA with a passion and didn’t want to support them, I went ahead and picked it up. I have a boxer named Jake “The Professional” Good … he’s 5-0-0 with 5 KOs. w00t!
Check out these up and coming releases:
Paperboy (360) TBA
Mortal Kombat 3 (360) TBA
Ghost Recon: Advanced Warfighter (GRAW) (360) 3/7 GOES GOLD!
Street Fighter II Hyper Fighting (360) Soon!
Battlefield 2: Modern Combat (360) 4/11
Scarface: The World Is Yours (360) 10/1
Gears of War (360) TBA
The Elder Scrolls IV: Oblivion (360) 3/20 - shaping up to be Game of the Year
College Hoops 2k6 (360) 3/13
Lost Magic (DS) 4/18
Lego Star Wars II : The Original Trilogy (DS) Fall
Mario Basketball 3 on 3 (DS) TBA
The Legend of Zelda DS (DS) TBA
The Legend of Zelda : Twilight Princess (Cube) Fall
I didn’t do any releases for any of the craptacular Sony systems, because we all know that they suck.
Visual Studio Command Line
This is merely more for my own keepsake… but here are Visual Studio 2005’s command line parameters and switches.
Use:
devenv [solutionfile | projectfile | anyfile.ext] [switches]
The first argument for devenv is usually a solution file or project file.
You can also use any other file as the first argument if you want to have the
file open automatically in an editor. When you enter a project file, the IDE
looks for an .sln file with the same base name as the project file in the
parent directory for the project file. If no such .sln file exists, then the
IDE looks for a single .sln file that references the project. If no such single
.sln file exists, then the IDE creates an unsaved solution with a default .sln
file name that has the same base name as the project file.
Command line builds:
devenv solutionfile.sln /build solutionconfig [ /project projectnameorfile [ /projectconfig name ] ]
Available command line switches:
/Build Builds the solution or project with the specified solution
configuration. For example “Debug”. If multiple platforms
are possible, the configuration name must be enclosed in quotes
and contain platform name. For example: “Debug|Win32”.
/Clean Deletes build outputs.
/Command Starts the IDE and executes the command.
/Deploy Builds and then deploys the specified build configuration.
/Edit Opens the specified files in a running instance of this
application. If there are no running instances, it will
start a new instance with a simplified window layout.
/LCID Sets the default language in the IDE for the UI.
/Log Logs IDE activity to the specified file for troubleshooting.
/NoVSIP Disables the VSIP developer’s license key for VSIP testing.
/Out Appends the build log to a specified file.
/Project Specifies the project to build, clean, or deploy. Must be used with /Build, /Rebuild, /Clean, or /Deploy.
/ProjectConfig Overrides the project configuration specified in the solution
configuration. For example “Debug”. If multiple platforms are
possible, the configuration name must be enclosed in quotes
and contain platform name. For example: “Debug|Win32”.
Must be used with /Project.
/Rebuild Cleans and then builds the solution or project with the
specified configuration.
/ResetAddin Removes commands and command UI associated with the specified Add-in.
/ResetSettings Restores the IDE’s default settings, optionally resets to
the specified VSSettings file.
/ResetSkipPkgs Clears all SkipLoading tags added to VSPackages.
/Run Compiles and runs the specified solution.
/RunExit Compiles and runs the specified solution then closes the IDE.
/SafeMode Launches the IDE in safe mode loading minimal windows.
/Upgrade Upgrades the project or the solution and all projects in it.
A backup of these files will be created as appropriate. Please
see Help on ‘Visual Studio Conversion Wizard’ for more
information on the backup process.
Product-specific switches:
/debugexe Open the specified executable to be debugged. The
remainder of the command line is passed to this
executable as its arguments.
/useenv Use PATH, INCLUDE, LIBPATH, and LIB environment variables

Kieran's Irish Pub
So last night I met up with Anna and a few of her friends for dinner at Rock Bottom… then onto Kieran’s Irish Pub for Kelly’s “Ms. Blarney 2006 Contest” put on by the Minneapolis St. Patrick’s Day Association. She got robbed of first place and had to settle with second…
It was a blast! There would be no reason why a guy should complain when he’s in the company of 6 beautiful women! Not to mention they were all dying to buy me a drink ;) (so there may be more to that story that I’m not telling…). At any rate, I’m not Irish, but it was a really good crowd and the entertainment (though a little long) was really good.
I’m enjoying spending time with Anna more and more… just hope Greg doesn’t get jealous that my attention is being divided! :)
Well, I guess I should get back to work… that and looking up tickets for the Chanhassen Dinner Theater’s rendition of the West Side Story and a different venue for the broadway play Wicked.
