Test Driven .Net v1.0 - RELEASED!
One of my favorite Visual Studio + NUnit Addins : Test Driven .Net hasofficially released version 1.0 (1.0.915d) today!! Congratulations
and i'mmmmm back
So I took a flight home from Burlington to Chanhassen last night. blah... all I gotfrom that was a giant headache.
I came home, watched Gladiator, andslept... like a baby... from 10pm till noon the next day. You heard me.. 14 hours off andon.
Greg and I setup the little 4.5' prelighted tree he purchased over the weekend! w00t!It's beginning to look at lot like Christmas! :)
Did some laundry, went to Target, and Taco Hell... I tell you, some guys have all theluck... me, I have none. Greg walks up to the “drop a coin into the bubbling water, land it on a platform and win something“ game. I proceed to tell him, “Thosethings are impossible, the bubbles make it tough. I've never won on those stupidthings.“ Guess what, one fucking nickle later and the bastard wins. What does hewin? Cinnamon twists! (fried beef fat covered in cinnamon, we think). He claims“skill“, I say “luck.“
We were good semaritan's tonight... and it didn't have ANYTHING to do with the factthat there was a hot girl involved. But we helped our neighbor Brett move his daughter's(the hot girl) queen sized bed up the stairs. We did our good deed for the day! :: grin:: Btw, her name was Jessica... hopefully more than a day over 18. We estimated that shecould be anywhere between 15 and 19, but with my luck, she's 16...
I hope my quick highlights were good enough for a laugh or two. I promise to get moreinteresting and notso negative in thefuture :)
The Hacker and the Ants: v2.0
![]() | TheHacker and the Ants: v2.0 Rudy Rucker Synopsis by Jake: A sci-fi novel involving an intricate twisted plot of a midlife hacker dealing with hislife as a software developer for a large robotics company. Including several geek topicssuch as genetic algorithms, artificial intelligence, and robotics, Rudy portraits aclassic hacker plot of sabotage, murder, and corny/short/geeky sex scenes. Definitely abook-to-movie candidate, The Hacker and the Ants provides a look into the future oftechnology parallel to conspiracy theorists from across the world. Skepticism + Geek +slight mix of paranoid schizophrenia all wrapped around a fast read. Good book IMHO. |
mmmmm turkey
So last night I went and saw National Treasure with Nicholas Cage... really goodmovie! Somewhat overdramatized romantic plot thread, but other than that.. it had a HUGEflurry of humor and JUST enough action...
Then after that Jackie, Kim, Adam, Brian and I headed down to a local restaraunt/barfor a “college night†celebration. It was packed. Got to see a few people butoverall it SUCKED. Maybe I'm an attention whore (OK so I am), but you'd think thatif people hadn't seen you in a while... and that you were nice enough to buy them adrink or spend the time saying hello, that they'd at least give you a good littleconversation. Like most of the time, danced a little, but eventually ended upat the bar drinking water... waiting... I guess I get what I deserve, I do the same thingto people I could care less about here at home... to each their own! and onceagain I was reminded of why I live in Minneapolis... For a little bit of time lastnight I wished that Saturday came sooner... I did however, love the fact that Icould get a draw of beer for $1.75 and bottles for $2.50... instead of $6.00.
But today has gone well so far.. went to a feast in a town down the road with grandmaand family. Later this afternoon we'll pile into the car to go visit dad at the otherhouse. It should be fun and relaxing.
wake me up if i'm dreaming..
you know.. it's really nice to see family and my dogs... i even had time to read mybook today!
but its always really nice to see Jackie!
Tonight I had the pleasure of having a candle lit dinner with her at the new Martini'srestaraunt in town... our table overlooked the beautiful riverfront and bridge. It waswonderful to have good food and good company. I even had a nice little red rose for herwhen she came to meet me...
Thanks sweetheart... you make me smile
(btw, where are the girls? don't they like this kinda stuff? shouldn't they be allover me?)

(quasi-NSFW): JaG modeling a very very hot bra... mmm.. did I mentionshe was a teacher? holy jumping yasser arafat ;)

the story thus far.. (warning, brutally honest... borderline mean)
So I have been officially back in this town for 2 whole days... and all I can say isthat I am reminded once again of why I left this town. Yes, I love my family and friendsthat I have here, but there is so much more out there... To give you more context,Burlington, IA is a black hole. It's big enough for an Iowa city... it has some dirt barshere and there and some psuedo-opportunities for people to make a living. But it stopsshort on motivation and forward motion. People get stuck in Burlington, settling andcomprimising their lives for this dying town. It's almost pathetic. They get drawn in ,constantly telling themselves that Burlington “is good enough for me.†Theybask in the opportunity to make fun of others or judge others who do different things...or they create drama on their own and drown themselves in telling other people.. it givesthem a fake notion of worth. “Mr. X stepped down from the board, got caught up inheavy drugs... “ or “Girl Y is pregnant again... this is the 3rdfather..†or “Did you hear Z about A?†... It's just too much to handlesometimes, and then I reflect on why I left and whether I'm being mean or not open mindedenough to actually think people can live like this, but then I realize at how closedminded the people are here. You know... Im sorry.. Im sorry that I started this blog postin this direction... It bugs me everytime and now that my life is in Chanhassen... I canreflect. I just want to pick my family up, and move them somewhere else. They dont wantto move, they have been snagged by the black hole, but I think they would do betterelsewhere...
onto what has happened so far...
I got into Burlington on Saturday... sat next to this very attractive liberal hippiefrom NY who was at a Cognative Psychology conference in Minneapolis.. Her name wasBridget.. a 26 year old vegetarian who goes to school ... crap I cant remember.. she wasreading the Time Machine.. facinating talk because we both talked about artificialintelligence.. her being a cognative scientist definitely helped with the intellectualconversation...
Then Leah (my sisters friend) , my sister, and I went bar hopping to all the dirt barshere in Burlington.. Schooners, Roeders, Whitey's, and then Sam's till 3:30 am or so..saw a few people that I knew (thankfully it wasnt more than a few)... Sunday.. ate somebreakfast, chilled.. went over to Dad's... saw my other little girl (mut).. and relaxed..watched Elf (btw, fucking hilarious).. Today.. ate at a mexican join.. went downtown tocatch up with Cynthia and Lonnie... saw her shop, she's doing well and Lonnie's movie iscoming along nicely! He has a good thing going for him (rare for Burlington).. I can'twait to get my autographed DVD of the Movie...
For now that shall be good enough.. only one more day till I get to tear up the townwith Jacks... When we come home, we like to dress up and pretend we're in a big city..its awesome going out and getting looks.. having something of such beauty on my arm :)w00t!
concourse wifi
w00t! im on the concourse at MN International airport and I'm on their WIFI!
POST HEAVEN!
plus its cheap.. $6.95 for the whole day.. I could spend that on a stupidmagazine easily.. instead.. I'm online.. t-1 hour till takeoff.
leaving on a jet plane...
ok so I'm heading off for Thanksgiving... out for a week! Don't know how much I'll getto bloggin.. but rest assured that I'll have info to give out!
until then, watchthis exciting video of the NBA brawl .. fans, players, coaches.. everyone have a safeand wonderful Thanksgiving!

i feel so... agile
So the BIG buzzworld around the development world is Agile. Agile Methodology, Agile Object Technology,AgileModeling, AgileDevelopment, Agile Eating... it's all about the agility.
But what does Agile mean? By definition agile is an adjective characterized byquickness, lightness, and ease of movement. How would this apply to software? (other thanthe technology changing so fast that we have to constantly spend $80 on books andmagazine subscriptions, not to mention keeping involved in the community to even attemptto keep up)... Agile SoftwareDevelopment. It sounds exciting and confusing. Hopefully, through the use of examplesI got from the recent OTUG/AEG meeting and ourexperiences within our company, I will turn you to the dark side and show you how agilitycombined with producing quality software makes complete sense.
Traditionally, software has been sold, estimated, designed, developed, tested, andreleased under a strict, orderly waterfallapproach. You spend months on end gathering requirements, trying to understand theentire system. Then you spend another good amount of time with that knowledge coming upwith an estimate for a contract. You design, develop, and test the project that usuallyends up over time and budget. Then you support and recieve change requests for thingsthat could have been solved along the way. But the very discipline and strictness thatcomes from using a waterfall technique did not allow for such things to happen. Insteadof an extremely valuable product for your customer, you end up spending MORE of theirmoney figuring out (after the fact) exactly what they want.
Notice how I used the word "valuable"... this keyword will be brought into ANY agilemethod conversation that you'll have...
Enter the irrational object thinkers (who tore the industry apart by FORCING people tochange their entire thoughts about code paradigms). Look what has happened? Granted it'sbeen close to 30 years since the beginnings of Object Oriented "Thinking", it's thenotion of changing traditional thought that is and will continue to hinder the forwardmovement of Agile "thinking". They were radicals in their field and made a change for thebetter of software development. I, along with many others, feel that the same type ofmovement needs to occur in order to bring more of the industry up to speed with the AgileMethodology. Though I hope it would advance slightly faster.
So thus far, I have kept speaking about the Agile Methodology and how it can radicallychange the software industry, so let's define it. Agile Software Development is definedas a methodology applied to design, development, and testing that creates shorter, iterative deliverables of software product that have been tested and thought out in asmaller, more agile manor (definition of agile above). Feel the agile love (as the usergroup would suggest).
Notice the differences between a standard waterfall approach and an agileapproach.
Requirements
Waterfall - do it ALL up front
Agile - do it for an iteration
Estimation
Waterfall - do it ALL up front with little confidence in correctness
Agile - do it for an iteration with HIGH confidence, give them a lengthy estimation withlittle confidence
Design, Development, Testing
Waterfall - long, separate, diluted steps for each in a very orderly fashion. notflexible
Agile - done per iteration with the thoughts about design, development, and testing onlythe little piece you define for the iteration, thus giving us more quality software andthe flexibility to quickly add features in the next iteration or make changes to currentpieces of the system. Shows the customer VALUE (I told you we'd talk about it)
Release
Waterfall - customer waits till the entire thing has been tried and tested before theycan see a deliverable
Agile - customer sees the steps and can play with real data after each iteration, witheach section being tested, thus the system has been tested thus far. Shows the customerVALUE (I told you we'd talk about it)
So this seems as though its the golden tray that all software will be served... butthere are key things that absolutely must happen before Agile works. There could also besituations where Agile methods might not make sense? (Though I challenge you to come upwith some)
What are those key things that have to happen?
1) Sales - the sales team HAS to be knowledgeable enough to sell a product beingdeveloped with agility. The client has to be informed up front that the costs involvedwill still be the same, if not lower... but we can't exactly tell you how much. Theestimations also have to be brought out with a confidence level to send a message to theclient that, even though they'll end up with a better product faster and cheaper, its notalways, even with waterfall, to correctly predict out into the future. This couldpotentially be one of the toughest parts of selling agile development. It's the educationin our company that needs to happen.
2) Thinking - the team has to be willing and open to agile methodologies. Pairprogramming, different work environments, Test Driven Development coupled withContinuousIntegration, and MOST IMPORTANTLY... COMMUNICATION. Communication needs to happen onEVERY level more so than ANY other technique (as Valpoints out). This technique is client facing and interaction with the team and thecustomer is essential... ecsential!
3) Environment - the team needs to have an environment that is agile friendly...whiteboards, continuous integration servers, source repositories, daily meeting places, team spaces where development happens in relative locality to the other developers.
Once those things start showing up, it's time for you to get some coaching, buy somebooks or research, sell your company on using the method and be a more happy developmentteam! Happy development teams == Better Code == Happy Clients == More Business. It justmakes sense, agile sense.
I will leave you with the AgileManifesto:
We are uncovering better ways of developing
software by doing it and helping others do it.
Through this work we have come to value:
Individuals and interactions over processes and tools
Working software over comprehensive documentation
Customer collaboration over contract negotiation
Responding to change over following a plan
That is, while there is value in the items on
the right, we value the items on the left more.

To celebrate a win (NSFW)
HAHAHAHA Man, what a day to be a Green Bay fan in Minnesota...
All the Viking's fans at work tomorrow have NO room to talk. Green Bay led the entiregame and deserved the win. They were the better team. Let's see how many excuses they cancome up with. I'll post them later on tomorrow. I'll post their name and what they said.I already have one for the collection already ;)
To celebrate the win (NSFW): the last one happens to be Miss TeenAmerica 2003 ;)

what is it about older women?
So this weekend rocked... Dawn and Mick came up to visit! Let's recap theweekend...
Friday:
Hit up Old Chicago for dinner and then the water towers for some pool...
Ran across the street to Epic for some dancing and drinks...
Got hit on by a few 30 year old trophy wives...
Danced with a few hotties here and there :) It was nice...
Saturday:
Relaxed and watched Iowa whoooooop Minnesota's ass!!!
Hit up Apple Bee's for some lunch/dinner
Went downtown bar hopping - The Refuge, Bar Fly, Gameworks, Hard Rock..
Saw a few of the girls I met the previous night at Epic, kinda strange
At Bar Fly, some gorgeous girl started playing with my hair and dancing with me.. can'tcomplain (got into Bar Fly for free)
Sunday:
Hit up Wendy's... they left... I played a few hours of Halo 2
time to watch the Packers vs Vikings game... we all know who'll dominate who.
Note: The funny thing is... is that Minnesota fans will brag about a win, but willALWAYS crawl around for an excuse for a loss... (No Moss, etc.) At work I neverget to brag about Green Bay winning cause the Minnesota fans always come up withsomething cheap, like Green Bay played an easier team or some bullshit...
But guess what.. Green Bay is currently winning and I already got a message from acoworker.. He told me I had no braggin rights tomorrow cause I skipped out on his party.Talk about desparate means to find an excuse for a coming loss... just as Ipredicted ;) hehe They'll hear about it tomorrow... thats if the Pack can keep their24 - 10 lead.
Education vs Experience
you should really go read this thread and comments leftby Aaron, Val, Avonelle, and myself.

more on Halo 2 (yeah....shut up)
So today, I am taking a vow of silence from Halo 2 for the entire day. Yes folks, youheard it right... This game is so amazingly life altering, that I have chosen to not playHalo 2 for an entire day to show my gratitude.
Did I mention that the game sold $125,000,000.00 the FIRST DAY RELEASED
What else am I going to post about?
finally a non-Halo post! Happy 229th Marines!
So I was looking through the IPs and HostNames that have touched my blog since thebeginning... and a few particularly intrigued me...
This one caught my attention:
n-kaf-isa1.kaf.afgn.army.mil
(if you are the one who's hostname (above) this represents, send me an email tojake@whoisjake.com ... I'd love to hear fromyou)
The reason why I wanted to post this information was so that I can give praise to theefforts going on over in foreign countries by our military. Since I was a young lad, Ialways wanted to be in the Air Force as a pilot. Until the age I was 18 in fact, I hadplans... Now I'm in software development (go figure). But in all seriousness, I really doappreciate everything that the soldiers are fighting for. Though its a touchy subject onthe validity and rationality of going to war in Iraq and Afghanistan, I do still want thesoldiers to know that I wish I could do more to show appreciation and that I'm proud tosay that I'm part of a nation that has a volunteer military force that is disciplined, trained, has superior equipment, and loyalty to the protection of the United States. Idon't really know what more I can say... except Thank You!

.Net User Group - Topic: SOA - Speaker: Rocky Lhotka
First off, let me throw up a disclaimer... Rocky is a very intelligent man. He is veryaccomplished in the technology field and is respected in the .NetCommunity...
But asking Rocky for his opinion on SOA, Service Oriented Architecture (read:glorified web services) is like asking George W. Bush what TribalSovereignty means in the 21 Century ... and we all know where that leads us.
In all honesty, what are you to expect when you go to a .Net user group with thetitle: SOA, Design and Programming and you get there see a dance around asombrero...
SOA is like object oriented thinking, but its not
SOA is like MTS, DCOM, COM, Components, and Web Services... but its not..
Ohh.. btw, I don't see any value to it yet.. so I really can't tell you how it willbenefit people.. Wait a minute, what do I really know? Should I even be presenting?
Time talking about traditional programming thought : 1 hour , only to tell me the rest ofthe presentation that it has be thrown out the window.
What was the thesis of the talk? SOA might be hype and it might be the next greatestthing (after 30 years)
The only positive thing that I got out of the entire 2.5 hours I was there... was thatJulie went along!!! and I got free Green Mill pizza and pop.
Some memorable quotes:
“We need cross pollination with .Net and Java on SOA“ - there you go JavaKid
“OHHHH I know WSDL“
and a few incredibly obvious statements from Suspenders Guy
